An operational research project on pregnancy and childbirth amongst the ethnic minorities of Mondulkiri was conducted by Nomad RSI. This project aimed to improve understanding of local representations and practices surrounding reproductive behaviour and birth events.

Based upon this research, the team conducted a series of training workshops for hospital staff and for personnel from the rural health centres and health posts. The objective of these sessions was to improve the interventions of public health staff relating to pregnancy and child-birth amongst the ethnic minority population, whose conceptions and practices differ considerably from their own, and to help ensure that the information they transmit through their activities are appropriate and useful to the target groups.

The main themes addressed were breastfeeding, pregnancy, the diagnosis of problems during pregnancy, birth, and infant nutrition.

2002. “Village Malaria Workers” project

Nomad RSI was asked by the WHO to conduct a pilot project in two villages in Mondulkiri province. The study sought to evaluate the introduction of new-generation malaria treatments based on Artemisinine (a biochemical compound extracted from the plant Artemisia annua) for treating children under 5 years of age. This project formed part of a national and international study into the subject, which brought together the work of a large number of organisations within Cambodia and around the world.

2001-2002. “Theatre and malaria education” pilot project

Nomad RSI implemented a pilot project providing malaria education through theatre shows in two villages in the province. The aim was to establish and test a culturally appropriate approach to raise awareness of malaria and deliver messages concerning prevention and treatment options among affected ethnic minority communities.

The final presentation took place in Pu Long village and was attended by a national delegation headed by his Excellency Hong Sun Hout (Health Minister) and representatives from the European Union, the WHO and the National Malaria Centre. Journalists from national newspapers and television channels also reported the event.

2002. Workshop for Action Against Hunger

Action Against Hunger (AAH) approached Nomad RSI in 2002 to help them clearly define and shape their future activities in Mondulkiri. Nomad RSI’s research data and practical experience concerning Bunong approaches to water and hygiene enabled the facilitation of a series of training workshops for the staff of AAH and helped them to design more culturally appropriate interventions.
