This book provides new insights on traditional midwifes by presenting a variety of analysis pertaining to the contemporary reconfigurations of their knowledge and practices. The contributors certainly recognize the public health benefits brought about by the biomedicalization of this sector, but they attempt to answer at the same time a set of fundamental questions: What are the various social forms of the roles of traditional midwives today? What are the process of legitimization and de-legitimization of their knowledge? To what extent public health policies related to childbirth are re-interpreted by the actors in charge to implement local maternal and child health programs? How traditional midwifes negotiate and use those policies? What about those who use their services? What are the heuristic dimensions of such issues? This volume is a common venture involving authors who belong to various fields, from social sciences to humanitarian medicine and public health. It explains the diversity of shapes and experiences of traditional midwifery by situating itself at the borders of fundamental and applied research.
