Sexualité et Sociabilité en Inde du Sud. Familles en péril au temps du Sida
Frédéric Bourdier (2001). Paris: Karthala, 440p.
Language: French.
While the AIDS epidemic provokes much consternation in Africa, it poses a supplementary set of problems in India: in a country where sexuality is wrapped in a profoundly moralistic discourse, activities aimed at prevention and information oscillate between an ethic of blame and an ethic of responsibility, without ever reaching a viable compromise. This book does not aim to develop an explanatory theory for the spread of the epidemic, even though some paths towards are suggested, but to explore the social and cultural dynamics which generate vulnerability with regards to the sexual transmission of HIV. Based upon a range of ethnographic sources, highly detailed and often challenging preconceived ideas, the author attempts to illuminate the links between kinship, strategies of alliance, spatial mobility and sexual encounters.
